Applications to the Desktop Context Menu

If you want really quick access to launch a frequently used application without putting extra icons on your desktop, you can add that application to the context menu for the desktop with a simple registry hack. Here’s how to do it.

Adding Applications to the Desktop Context Menu

For today’s lesson we’ll show you how to add Notepad to the menu, but you could add any applications you want instead. The first thing you’ll want to do is open up regedit.exe through the Start Menu search or run box, and then browse down to the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell
The screen should look similar to this one if you are in the right place.
Next, you’ll want to create a new key underneath the shell key, the name of which is exactly what is going to show up on the desktop menu. Right-click on the “shell” key, and then choose New \ Key from the menu.
Give the new key the name that you want to show up on the desktop context menu. For this example we’ll be using Notepad.
Optional: If you want to assign an “Alt” key to this menu entry for quicker access, you can change the (Default) value on the right and put an & character in front of the key you want to use. For instance, if you wanted to be able to just use the N key to launch Notepad once the desktop context menu pops up, you can do this:

Next you’ll need to create the command key that will actually hold the command used to launch the application. Right-click on the new Notepad key, and then choose New \ Key from the menu.
Give this key the name “command” in lowercase.
To complete this step you’ll need the full path to the application that you want to launch. You can use Shift + Right-Click to get the Copy as Path menu item to find this more quickly. Note: of course, for Notepad you wouldn’t need the full path, but this is just an example.

Now click on “command” on the left side, and then double-click on the (Default) key in the right side to edit the string value.

Paste in the full path to the executable that you got from the “Copy as Path” step above, or you can put in the full path yourself if you’d like.
Once it’s done, it should look like this:
And right-clicking on the desktop will produce the new menu item… naturally, using this menu item should launch Notepad.
You can add as many applications to the desktop context menu as you’d like, just repeat the steps again with a new menu item name.

Reducing the RAM dedicated to inactive applications enables Mavericks to dedicate additional memory to active applications requiring additional resources.

God Mode in Windows 7

What is Windows 7 God Mode?

Windows 7 god mode is a simple way to centralized access all the administrative options that are normally seen inside control panel into a newly created folder which can be placed anywhere inside the computer. Usually the  administrative options are seen scattered inside the control panel arranged in different categories and sub categories. windows 7 god mode arrange all the administrative options inside one single window. I find it much more neatly arranged and user friendly. It’s been a long time since I opened my control panel, ever since I started using this god mode.
Surprisingly, the procedure for enabling god mode is very simple. This hidden mode can be enabled in Vista, windows 7 and Windows 8.

How to enable Windows 7 god mode? (can be done in Vista and Win 8)

1) Create a new folder anywhere you like
create new folder What is Windows 7 God Mode?

2) Rename the folder to God Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}. The name “God Mode” can be replaced by a name of your choice, but the remaining should be the same.
folder rename god mode What is Windows 7 God Mode?
3) The default folder icon now changes to a Windows 7 god mode control panel icon.
god mode with control panel icon What is Windows 7 God Mode?
4) Once you open the new created control panel icon, you can see all the administrative options arranged inside. There are almost 230 options inside mine.
I find placing this god mode icon in my desktop very helpful. Whenever I need to open options like network and sharing, printers etc, it makes it very easy to find all this icons placed inside one icon rather than going for the control panel.

Windows 7 god mode errors

A word of caution before you use the God mode. Some users have complained that god mode crashed their computer when they tried to enable it on 64 bit Vista operating system. Microsoft couldn’t recreate the same issue on their computer. So it is still not clear, if that was an issue with the Operating system or some software conflicting with the operating system when god mode is enabled. From my end, I have tried the same on couple of computers on training lab with 64 bit Vista ultimate installed, and it worked fine.
Just like Windows 7 god mode revealed here, Microsoft confirmed that the god mode existed for most operating systems which were released before Vista. More and more god modes are discovered and released publicly by bloggers and web enthusiasts.I will come with more of that information in a later post.

How to insert sample text into a document in Word

To insert sample text in Word 2007 or Word 2010, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use rand()

To insert localized sample text in Word 2007 or Word 2010, type =rand() in the document where you want the text to appear, and then press ENTER.

The sample text that is inserted for the English version of Word 2007 or Word 2010 resembles the following text:
On the Insert tab, the galleries include items that are designed to coordinate with the overall look of your document. You can use these galleries to insert tables, headers, footers, lists, cover pages, and other document building blocks. When you create pictures, charts, or diagrams, they also coordinate with your current document look.¶

You can easily change the formatting of selected text in the document text by choosing a look for the selected text from the Quick Styles gallery on the Home tab. You can also format text directly by using the other controls on the Home tab. Most controls offer a choice of using the look from the current theme or using a format that you specify directly.¶

To change the overall look of your document, choose new Theme elements on the Page Layout tab. To change the looks available in the Quick Style gallery, use the Change Current Quick Style Set command. Both the Themes gallery and the Quick Styles gallery provide reset commands so that you can always restore the look of your document to the original contained in your current template.¶
Note This text includes a paragraph symbol (¶) that is displayed when sample text is inserted.

You can control how many paragraphs and lines appear by adding numbers inside the parentheses of the rand() function. The =rand() function has the following syntax:
=rand(p,l)

Note In this function, p is the number of paragraphs, and l is the number of lines that you want to appear in each paragraph.
The following are some examples that show how the parameters work:
  • =rand(1) inserts one paragraph with three lines of text in the paragraph.
  • =rand(10,10) inserts 10 paragraphs with 10 lines of text in each paragraph.
The parameters are optional. If you omit the parameters, the default number of paragraphs is three, and the default number of lines per paragraph is also three.

Method 2: Use rand.old()

To insert localized sample text that is compatible with Microsoft Office Word 2003 and earlier versions, type =rand.old() in the document where you want the text to appear, and then press ENTER.

The sample text that is inserted in the English version of Word 2007 or Word 2010 appears resembles the following :
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. ¶

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. ¶

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. ¶
Notice that the sample text in other language versions of Word 2007 or Word 2010 does not have the same meaning as the text that is mentioned earlier in this section.

For example, the Japanese version of Word shows text that is similar in translation to the following text:
"Word 2003 is a ground breaking word processor that enabled…"
And the German version of Word provides the following text:
"Franz jagt im komplett verwahrlosten Taxi quer durch Bayern."
You can control how many paragraphs and lines appear by adding numbers inside the parentheses of the rand.old() function. The =rand.old() function has the following syntax:
=rand.old(p,l)

Note
In this function, p is the number of paragraphs, and l is the number of lines that you want to appear in each paragraph.
The parameters are optional. If you omit the parameters the default number of paragraphs is three, and the default number of lines per paragraph is also three.

Method 3: Use lorem()

To insert non-localized, pseudo-Latin sample text in Word 2007 or Word 2010, type =lorem() in the document where you want the text to appear, and then press ENTER.

The sample text that is inserted resembles the following text:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Maecenas porttitor congue massa. Fusce posuere, magna sed pulvinar ultricies, purus lectus malesuada libero, sit amet commodo magna eros quis urna.¶

Nunc viverra imperdiet enim. Fusce est. Vivamus a tellus.¶

Pellentesque habitant morbi tristique senectus et netus et malesuada fames ac turpis egestas. Proin pharetra nonummy pede. Mauris et orci.¶
You can control how many paragraphs and lines appear by adding numbers inside the parentheses of the lorem() function. The =lorem() function has the following syntax: lorem(p,l)

Note
In this function, p is the number of paragraphs, and l is the number of lines that you want to appear in each paragraph.

The parameters are optional. If you omit the parameters the default number of paragraphs is three, and the default number of lines per paragraph is also three.

RAND function in Microsoft Word

Creating sample text in Word is easy if you know this somewhat obscure trick. And hold onto your hat: It still works in Word 2007!
Maybe you're experimenting with a particular Word feature or format and need to generate some dummy text to work with. Or maybe you need some placeholder text to use as you develop a page layout. Or maybe you're just bored to distraction. Whatever the case, the RAND function might be just what you need. Here's how to get this oddball function to work.
Click where you want to enter the sample text and type =RAND(). Put two numbers in the parentheses, separated by a comma. The numbers will tell Word to create a certain number of paragraphs (the first number) consisting of a certain number of sentences (the second number). So, for instance, the formula below will produce three paragraphs, each consisting of four sentences:
=RAND(3,4)
After you enter the formula, press Enter. Word will replace what you typed with the sample text, as shown in Figure A. rand function

Figure A

Word 2007 supports this feature as well, but for some reason, Microsoft decided to change the text generated by the function. As you can see in Figure B, the verbiage now appears to have been extracted from a help document. Some sort of subliminal user education scheme, perhaps. I'd be just as happy to stick with the lazy dog, but hey -- you can't fight progress. rand function 2007
