Symantec upbeat on Indian cloud computing market
MUMBAI: IT security firm Symantec Software Solutions said the country's nascent cloud computing market, a platform where software applications and related resources can be shared online, is likely to bloom within a year.
"A cloud is a big wave in the global market, and India certainly is following the trends," Symantec Vice-President Information Management Group, Vijay Mhaskar, told reporters here.
The revenue from Indian cloud market is likely to grow over $3-billion by 2015, from the current $534-million, he said, quoting the IDC report.
"Besides the actual numbers, there is a significant growth in cloud computing. It is certainly adopted globally, and India is following the same trend for adoption," Mhaskar said.
Cloud computing, which is Internet-based, facilitates sharing of technological resources, software and digital information. The emerging field would function on a pay-per-use model, helping technology companies to bring down cost.
The cloud computing platform is expected to mainly benefit enterprise SMB (small and medium business), SOHO (small office, home office) and consumer segments.
"Indian enterprises are discussing virtualisation and private/hybrid clouds. While agility and affordability are the main drivers, having fewer legacy systems is helping this transition," Mhaskar said, adding that the the transition brings in a new set of challenges related to security, scalability, and disaster preparedness.
Symantec, which conducted a survey, found out that out of the 3,700 companies which participated in the research globally, 73 per cent wanted to virtualise their database applications within a year.
Symantec said 57 per cent of the 200 Indian firms, which participated in the survey, were implementing server virtualisation compared to 45 per cent globally.
The research said one-third of the companies surveyed were planning for private and hybrid cloud deployments.
Server and storage virtualisation are the most mature with 31 and 26 per cent of enterprises implementing, while the private Storage-as-a-Service is the least mature with 21 per cent adopting, the survey said.
With Sony playstation, Sega, IMF, CitiBank, Gmail being hacked, it is not a surprise that 76 per cent of the companies were concerned about the security reasons.
"Security is the number one concern after having implemented server virtualisation and 76 per cent cited it," Mhaskar said.
Digital information in India will grow from 40,000 petabytes to 2.3-million petabytes (one petabyte equals 1,000 terabytes) over the next decade (2010 to 2020), twice as fast as the worldwide rate, Symantec Director-Technology India and SAARC, Anand Naik, said, adding that it was important to develop security to protect privacy of the corporates who wanted to store their data using cloud.
"Awareness around these emerging technologies is prevalent, but the Indian enterprise is yet to move completely. There is a wait and watch approach to the level of maturity in the market before implementation," he said.
Symantec recommended that enterprises could leverage and modernise their existing infrastructure prior to the implementation of hybrid/private cloud.

Google has mentioned that the translation for these five new alpha languages will be less fluent and include many untranslated words, compared to other mature languages which are extensively available on the web. Also, as always everyone will be open to correct the guys at Google if they find some mistakes and errors in the translations.
The company has also mentioned that these languages each will have their own unique scripts, and they have enabled a transliterated input method for users without Indian language keyboards.

India Has Issued 9.5 Million Digital Identity Numbers
India has issued digital identities to about 9.5 million people so far, and plans to step up enrollment to 1 million a day from October, the head of the agency issuing the biometric identities said on Thursday at a conference in Bangalore.
The digital identities, called Unique Identity (UID) or Aadhaar numbers, will provide proof of identity to the large number of poor Indians who do not have house addresses, school certificates, birth certificates or other documents that are usually used to prove identity in India, said Nandan Nilekani, chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
The Aadhaar number gives Indian residents an online identity on a database that can be accessed from any location through the Internet or from a mobile phone, Nilekani said.
A large number of government and other organizations have accepted the Aadhaar number as a proof of identity, which could potentially extend banking and other services to more people, he added. The unique identity is also being promoted as a way to provide targeted welfare services for India's poor.
India's Ministry of Finance recognized in December the Aadhaar number as an officially valid identification to satisfy the Know Your Customer (KYC) norms for opening bank accounts.
The government is increasingly insisting on KYC compliance from banks, financial institutions and telecommunications services providers to put a curb on tax defaulters and prevent terrorists from misusing the telecommunications network.
The acceptance of the Aadhaar number as an identity proof for KYC will remove barriers to access for India's marginalized people to a variety of services like gas connections and bank accounts, Nilekani said.
The creation of a database of information on people for the Aadhaar project has however been criticized by privacy groups and NGOs (nongovernment organizations) that argue that the personal information could be misused by the government.
The UIDAI has said that it will not collect very detailed information, not even citizenship information, from people enrolling in the system. "The [Aadhaar] number will prove only identity and not citizenship," the government said in Parliament earlier this year.
But that may also turn out to be a problem, according to analysts and some politicians. Illegal migrants from neighboring countries like Bangladesh could enroll for an Aadhaar number, and take advantage of welfare programs. If on the other hand, Aadhaar is just one of many identity proofs and documents required to get services, then its value for the poor may get undermined, an analyst said.
The IT industry expects large opportunities for providing hardware, IT services, and call center services for the Aadhaar project. Nilekani also expects a variety of applications to be developed around the UIDAI identity management and verification platform.
The Aadhaar projects aims to issue identity numbers to 600 million people over the next three years or so, Nilekani said. Enrollment is currently voluntary.

But as far as its other plans in the Indian enterprise market go, Google has formulated a network of partners including big names like Tata Communications, TCS and Wipro for offering enterprise solutions.
The Indian enterprise market is expected to grow by 20% in FY12 and Google wants to join the party.
In an interview with CNBC-TV18’s Kritika Saxena, Douglas Farber, MD, Enterprise (APAC), Google said, “We are really excited about the opportunity in India. Our organisation has grown significantly. We have added lots of resources. In particular we have hired well over a 100 engineers in the country to help support some core development efforts and engineering efforts. So, it’s a major hot bed for engineering and development."
He further said, "On a customer side, we are seeing SMBs, mid market companies and large enterprises are flocked to the Google value proposition and the enterprise.”

Research in Motion Ltd. (RIMM)’s PlayBook tablet computer, panned at its April debut, has an edge over Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPad in the Army thanks to RIM’s encrypted servers.
That advantage may soon dissipate as Apple’s more broadly popular devices march toward Defense Department security certification, which may come as early as this month, military officials said.
Tablet computers are being tested across all military branches, according to interviews conducted by Bloomberg Government since May 17. The services pay $500 to $600 per tablet, less than half the cost of laptops that are “ruggedized,” or enhanced with a shell and toughened to withstand harsh environments. Tablets also may replace paper manuals, maps, biometric devices and some communications tools.
The U.S. Army is leaning toward the PlayBook because RIM “addressed security concerns from the get-go,” said Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Dosmann, who oversees mobile device pilot- testing for the Army’s cybersecurity division. Security remains an issue for Apple and may hold back wider use of iPads, he said.
Apple, Dell Inc. (DELL), RIM and other tablet makers are vying to tap the military market for computers, laptops and servers worth $2.9 billion in the government’s 2010 fiscal year. Of that amount, spending on enhanced laptops was $33 million. The department spent $37 million on tablets in the same fiscal year, according to Bloomberg data.
‘Disruptive Technology’
Tablets are a “disruptive technology” that can replace heavier and more expensive equipment, Dosmann said. “As an infantry soldier, the last thing I want is something more to carry.”
To secure the devices so they can only be accessed using the common access card carried by all military service members and Defense employees, the services must install additional software or hardware, Gary Winkler, the Army’s former program executive officer for enterprise information systems, said in a June 20 telephone interview. Winkler oversaw about $4 billion, or 56 percent, of the Army’s information-technology budget.
“It’s very tough to drive the manufacturers to make the tablets and the devices with the embedded security that only the Defense Department needs or only parts of the federal government needs because the market just isn’t big enough,” said Winkler, who now heads Fairfax, Virginia-based Cyber Solutions and Services Inc., a government consulting and contracts support company.
Secure Servers
The iPhone and iPad already interact with the common access card, or CAC, and will be approved soon, possibly this month, Winkler said. Security engineering is under way for Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Windows Mobile operating system was CAC-enabled more than a year ago.
BlackBerry smartphones, which run on RIM’s secure servers, already are approved by the Defense Department and in use on the battlefield. The PlayBook runs on the same servers, Dosmann said.
The Defense Contract Management Agency, which oversees defense contractors’ performance, is pilot-testing about 20 tablet computers, including the iPad and PlayBook, Jacob Haynes, acting chief information officer for DCMA, said in an interview.
“The next six months are going to be the biggest six months in mobile IT history, especially for the federal government,” Haynes said.
Security concerns haven’t reduced enthusiasm for iPads among military service members. Aircrews in the U.S. Marines, Air Force and Navy are using iPads unconnected to the Internet.
Flight Bags
The Air Force’s Air Mobility Command is testing iPads as a replacement for the traditional flight bag pilots use to store paper navigation charts and manuals. Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California released an invitation for bids for 100 black iPad 2s, according to a May 25 online notice.
“Tablet devices represent a totally new technology with flexibility and portability benefits that may reduce publication and printing costs across the command,” Kathleen Ferrero, a spokeswoman for Air Mobility Command, said in an e-mail on June 10.
The Navy has purchased 30 iPads to store aircrew documents, according to Amanda Greenberg, spokeswoman for the service. It’s also testing Android and Windows 7 operating systems, she said. BlackBerry is the only mobile device allowed to access Navy’s network at this point.
Dell, based in Round Rock, Texas, is testing its Streak tablet with Defense Department. “We are not trying to compete with the iPad,” John Marinho, Dell’s director of enterprise mobility and services, said in a telephone interview. “The iPad is a great device, but it’s a consumer device. It doesn’t address all of the pain points that we do.”
‘Ruggedized’ Laptops
Tablet procurements will spike before year’s end, Dosmann said, though some of the devices may not be allowed to access Army’s network.
Apple’s mobile operating system was the first tablet for which the Defense Information Systems Agency created a security procedure, said Lieutenant Colonel April Cunningham, a Defense Department spokeswoman. DISA is working on a procedure for Android devices.
IPads, PlayBooks and other tablets won’t completely displace the ruggedized laptops and other small computers in the department, Cunningham said.
“If you drop a couple $500 tablets and destroy them, then maybe you could have paid for a ruggedized laptop which may have better survived the impact,” she said.
‘Ruggedized’ Tablets
Companies are creating “ruggedized” tablets to solve this problem, said Frank Smith, CIO and vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp. (BAH), a strategic adviser for government agencies. Enhancing a tablet adds about 40 percent to its price, he said.
So far, the military services have bought tablets directly from manufacturers and through resellers in small lots. In the future, the Defense Department will use “traditional procurement methods” to buy the devices in bulk, Cunningham said.
Apple spokeswoman Trudy Miller and Research in Motion spokeswoman Jamie Ernst declined to comment.

“The next six months are going to be the biggest six months in mobile IT history, especially for the federal government,” Haynes said.
Security concerns haven’t reduced enthusiasm for iPads among military service members. Aircrews in the U.S. Marines, Air Force and Navy are using iPads unconnected to the Internet.
Flight Bags
The Air Force’s Air Mobility Command is testing iPads as a replacement for the traditional flight bag pilots use to store paper navigation charts and manuals. Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California released an invitation for bids for 100 black iPad 2s, according to a May 25 online notice.
“Tablet devices represent a totally new technology with flexibility and portability benefits that may reduce publication and printing costs across the command,” Kathleen Ferrero, a spokeswoman for Air Mobility Command, said in an e-mail on June 10.
The Navy has purchased 30 iPads to store aircrew documents, according to Amanda Greenberg, spokeswoman for the service. It’s also testing Android and Windows 7 operating systems, she said. BlackBerry is the only mobile device allowed to access Navy’s network at this point.
Dell, based in Round Rock, Texas, is testing its Streak tablet with Defense Department. “We are not trying to compete with the iPad,” John Marinho, Dell’s director of enterprise mobility and services, said in a telephone interview. “The iPad is a great device, but it’s a consumer device. It doesn’t address all of the pain points that we do.”
‘Ruggedized’ Laptops
Tablet procurements will spike before year’s end, Dosmann said, though some of the devices may not be allowed to access Army’s network.
Apple’s mobile operating system was the first tablet for which the Defense Information Systems Agency created a security procedure, said Lieutenant Colonel April Cunningham, a Defense Department spokeswoman. DISA is working on a procedure for Android devices.
IPads, PlayBooks and other tablets won’t completely displace the ruggedized laptops and other small computers in the department, Cunningham said.
“If you drop a couple $500 tablets and destroy them, then maybe you could have paid for a ruggedized laptop which may have better survived the impact,” she said.
‘Ruggedized’ Tablets
Companies are creating “ruggedized” tablets to solve this problem, said Frank Smith, CIO and vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp. (BAH), a strategic adviser for government agencies. Enhancing a tablet adds about 40 percent to its price, he said.
So far, the military services have bought tablets directly from manufacturers and through resellers in small lots. In the future, the Defense Department will use “traditional procurement methods” to buy the devices in bulk, Cunningham said.
Apple spokeswoman Trudy Miller and Research in Motion spokeswoman Jamie Ernst declined to comment.

The 2008 accord was intended to resolve a feud over whether Zuckerberg stole the idea for what became the world's most popular social networking website from the Winklevosses, who like him had attended Harvard University. Their battle was dramatized in the 2010 film "The Social Network."
After agreeing to the cash-and-stock accord, the Winklevosses sought to undo it, saying it was fraudulent because Facebook hid information from them, and that they deserved more money.
The 6-foot 5-inch (1.96-meter) twins, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, had been planning to appeal an April 11 ruling by a federal appeals court in San Francisco upholding the settlement, which that court called "quite favorable."
But in a filing on Wednesday with that court, the Winklevosses said that after "careful consideration," they decided not to seek Supreme Court review. The filing did not give a reason for the decision.
Zuckerberg created Facebook in 2004 in his Harvard University dormitory room.
The California case had been brought by ConnectU Inc, which the Winklevosses set up with another Harvard student, Divya Narendra, who joined in Wednesday's filing.
Facebook, in a statement, said: "We've considered this case closed for a long time, and we're pleased to see the other party now agrees."
Jerome Falk, a lawyer for the Winklevosses and Narendra, did not immediately return requests for a comment.
Wednesday's filing clears the way for Facebook to seek the dismissal of a related lawsuit filed in Boston federal court.
Analysts have estimated that Palo Alto, California-based Facebook could be worth $70 billion or more should it conduct an initial public offering, perhaps in early 2012.
Facebook could be worth more than $100 billion in an IPO, CNBC television estimated last week.
The case is Facebook Inc et al v. ConnectU Inc et al, 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 08-16745.
