How to Deal With Depression

How to Deal With Depression

In the day to day language, depression refers to a dip in one’s mood that could be somewhat temporary and is a result of something inconsequential. Then there is also what is generally termed as clinical depression, a comparatively more acute case lasting two weeks or more. Usually the latter is so serious that it ends up majorly hampering a person’s daily life style. Depression, acute or not, makes one feel unhappy and causes a person to lose zest for life.

The reason for depression could be anything from something trivial to one more significant. Trivial reasons could be like feeling unhappy over one’s non-fulfillment of wishes, quarrel with a friend, examination tension, etc. Prolonged case of acute depression could be fallout of some trauma like death of a near and dear one, successive failures in one’s personal and professional life, poor health, personal physical and mental abuse, etc. While temporary depression may come and go, it is when the depression is acute that treatment becomes mandatory.

How to Deal with Depression?

Come Out of Your Shell

Depressed people normally tend to totally seclude themselves from public / social activities. They generally like to remain by themselves and this is not a positive behavioral sign. The phrase ‘empty mind is a devil’s workshop’ aptly applies here and so that person should try socializing a bit. Go out for movies, visit friends, engage in sporting activities – a depressed person should do anything and everything that engages him / her positively and helps take his mind off the problem hampering a normal living.

Stop Thinking Negative

Someone has rightly said ‘you become what you think’ and this truth applies to the case a depressed person as well because they have a tendency to think negative. This single flaw of negative thinking can crucially eat into one’s personality and mental makeup over a period of time. As such, you can consider talking to another mature person about this problem and the reason for your depression. Incase no such person is around, do not hesitate from taking a counselor’s help. He /she will instruct you on ways of challenging your negative though process and rectifying it.

Medication

It is said that anti-depressant medicine nowadays is not addictive chemically. Normally it takes around two to three weeks before it begins to show any advantageous affect and as a rule, it is prescribed for a period of at least six months. But keep in mind that incase there are tough situations causing you to experience depression, then anti-depressants will not cure them. The medication will only help you to conform back to your natural mindset which will then help you in coping with things. It is pertinent that you consult with your doctor before taking such medication.
