Google glasses: Hitting market this year....
Sergey Brin envisions Google's Internet glasses hitting the market this
year with an eye toward freeing people from unsocial habits engendered
by "emasculating" smartphones.
Brin spoke of inspiration behind Google Glass eyewear during a brief appearance Wednesday on stage at a TED Conference known for an inspiring mix of influential big thinkers and "ideas worth spreading.
He playfully demonstrated his point on stage by ignoring a theater
audience to stare down at his smartphone, saying he was intent on a
message from a Nigerian prince need of $10 million dollars.
"I like to pay attention because that is how we originally funded the
company," the Google co-founder quipped about a well-known scam.
"Seriously, in addition to potentially socially isolating yourself
when you are out and about using your phone, I feel it is kind of
emasculating," he continued.
Brin described Glass as the first form factor to deliver on a vision
he had from Google's inception that one day search queries would be
outmoded and information from the Internet would come to people when
they need it.
Glass frees the eyes as well as the hands when it comes to connecting to the Internet on the go, according to Brin.
"That is why we put the display up high, out of the line of sight,"
Brin said, wearing the Glass eyewear he is rarely seen without.
"If I wore a ball cap, the display would be on the brim and not where
you are looking," he continued. "And sound goes through bones in the
cranium, which is a little freaky at first, but you get used to it."
Glass wearers can speak commands to the eyewear, and built-in camera
technology allows pictures or video to be captured from first-person
perspectives while people take part in what is happening.
"Lastly, I realized I also have a nervous tic," Brin said. "The cell
phone is a nervous habit. If I smoked, I'd probably smoke instead."
He observed that smartphones sometimes become props used by people as
distractions or to appear busy, saying that Glass strips away excuses
not to be sociable or to not be honest about simply wanting to take a
break.
"It really opened by eyes to how much of my life I spent secluded
away in email, social posts or what-not," Brin said. "There is nothing
bad about that, but with this thing I don't have to be checking them all
the time."
Brin said Glass eyewear will be available later this year at prices
lower than the $1,500 charged to software developers and early adopters
during a restricted test phase.
Wednesday was the last day for "explorers" with creative vision and
$1,500 to spare to vie to be part of a select group of people who get to
experiment with Glass.
A video intended to capture what it feels like to use Glass was online at google.com/glass/start/.
Google has been speaking with eyeglass frame companies about ideas
for a consumer version of the glasses, which he expected would cost
"significantly" less than the Explorer prototypes.
US adults interested in the program had to say what they would do if
they had Glass eyewear and then post the messages at Twitter or Google+
social networks with hashtag #ifihadglass.
People chosen for the Explorer program will need to pick up in person
at sessions to be held in New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco.

How to buy books from Google
Google on Thursday started
selling books through its Android Play store in India. Google's
decision to start selling content in India through the Play store comes
nearly three months after Apple, which competes with Google in the
smartphone and tablet market, introduced iTunes content store.
However, unlike iTunes store that sells music and films - but not books - in India, Google is selling only books for now. But sources say the company realizes India is an important smartphone and tablet market and going forward it is likely to add more content to the Play store.
"Just under one year ago, we introduced Google Play. Today we're adding books to Google Play for people in India. Books on Google Play now offers thousands of Indian titles, from new releases to classics," a Google official wrote on the company's blog.
"It's easy to find
great Indian authors such as Amish Tripathi, Devdutt Pattanaik and APJ
Abdul Kalam, plus international bestsellers from the world's largest
ebookstore."
While Google's Android operating system powers a majority of smartphones in India the company has been slow to build a content ecosystem on the Play store.
But last year it picked some pace as it added the support for India-specific prices for apps in the Play store and rolled out Navigation service through an app for Android devices and iPhones.
The company has also lagged behind in introducing its Nexus phones and tablets, which are officially supported by Google, in India. So far, only one Nexus device - Nexus S - has been launched here.
Google said that books bought from the Play store will sync across devices with the help of the Play Books app. "With Google Play you can read on the device of your choice. And with your books in the cloud you can read on the web, a phone, or a tablet and pick up right where you left off," the Google official wrote on the blog.
Interestingly, users will be able to purchase books on the Play store through a web browser and read them on a computer. Apple's iTunes doesn't allow users to purchase items through a web browser.

Android apps max size shoots from 50MB to 4GB
Some Android apps are about to take a lot longer to download, but they'll also have more interactive 3-D graphics, audio, and video. Google boosted its maximum app size from 50MB to 4GB today, according to the Android Developers blog.
"Android applications have historically been limited to a maximum size of 50MB. This works for most apps, and smaller is usually better -- every megabyte you add makes it harder for your users to download and get started," software architect Tim Bray wrote on the blog. "However, some types of apps, like high-quality 3D interactive games, require more local resources."
The way the new byte system will work is users' Android Package files (APK) will still be limited to 50MB to "ensure secure on-device storage." But now developers can attach two more 2GB expansion files, which will let them have more flexibility and creativity in app development.
This change means that the Android Market will now host the files, which helps lower costs for developers. It also means that users will be able to see an app's total size before purchasing and installing it. An extra bonus is that on "most newer devices," Bray wrote, the 15-minute refund period won't start until the entire app is downloaded.

Google Glass contest gives non-devs a chance to grab $1,500 specs
Summary: Google has revealed that non-developers will be
able to get their hands on a prototype of the upcoming Google Glass
device if they can sell their vision of what they'd use it for in 50
words or less.
Google has launched a new 'competition' that will let non-developers get their hands on the company's internet-enabled glasses, Google Glass.
Announced at Google's I/O conference last year, the prototype 'Explorer Edition' of the networked specs was only made available to developers. The competition, launched on Wednesday, will be the first time that those outside of the developer community will be able to access the devices, with 8,000 of them up for grabs.
In order to enter, Google is asking people to say on Twitter and Google+ how they would use the glasses if they were given a set.
Google is asking entrants to tag their ideas, which must be no longer than 50 words, with the hashtag #ifIhadglass. Entrants are also allowed to use up to five photos and a video up to 15 seconds in length.

Applications must be made before 27 February and Google will award the glasses to the lucky competition winners at a pick-up experience in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles.
The competition is open anyone over the age of 18 living in the US and will give them the opportunity to try out the glasses before they go on general sale. While Google hasn't set a date when that will be, it's thought Google Glass could reach general availability at the end of 2014.
However, there's no such thing as a free lunch for would-be Glass owners: competition winners will still need to spend $1,500 to get their Explorer Edition of the glasses.

blog says it has aimed the Chromebook Pixel for ‘especially for power users who have fully embraced the cloud’. Hence, unlike the earlier Chromebooks from
Google and its partner manufacturers like Samsung, Acer and HP, which are sold for as low as
$199, the Chromebook Pixel targets an elite class of buyers who don’t bother
about the price, but minds the performance; users who are happy working on the
cloud across superfast connectivity. Hence the price is in the upper band: $
1299 for 32 GB WiFi model; $ 1449 for the 64 GB LTE model.
